The activities of HACVS are planned and
overseen by a board of Trustees elected by the member organisations.

Chairman

I 'evolved' as chairman of HACVS in early 2006, and was elected at
the Spring AGM. This coincided with my retirement, after 40 years in
local government, the last 28 living in Horsham, and becoming
part-time self employed, working with a range of local authorities
and educational institutions.
The knowledge and skills, which I bring to my HACVS role, arise from
a career in teaching and social care, with young people, adults and
older people. I more recently specialised in quality audit and
inspection of services, developing services for service users and
carers and complaints handling. I also completed an MA in Business
and Public Sector Strategy.
My other major interest is local football, where I am the club
secretary at Roffey Robins FC, and chairman of Faygate FC and the
Horsham & District Youth Football League.
My hobbies and interests revolve around home and family. I am a DIY
enthusiast, inside and outside the house, enjoy activities with my
four grandchildren, and watch football and cricket locally, when
time permits. I also enjoy short break holidays, abroad and in the
UK. My philosophy for the future is 'carry on doing what I'm doing
now, as long as I continue to enjoy it'. |

Following retirement 10 years ago, from a career in Personnel
Management (Human Resource Management as it is now known); I joined
the Horsham Citizens Advice Bureau, initially as a volunteer and
later as a paid specialist advice worker (Employment - no surprises
there!). In addition, during my six years with the CAB I supported
a number of successful funding projects, particularly with the
National Lottery and Legal Aid services. The experience these
provided, gave me an insight into funding for the voluntary sector,
in particular preparing the essential governance basis to ensure a
successful bid.
Joining HACVS in 2005 my initial tasks were to plan and support the
move to the new offices at Lavinia House at the same time
transferring the charity over to incorporated status. I am pleased
that these have both been completed. I am currently supporting
HACVS staff in wider matters associated with governance (not least
our employment policies) to ensure we meet our legal duties and our
funding applications are supported by internal policies and
procedures that are as robust as practicable.
Next stage will be to identify appropriate projects and seek funding
from likely sources. |

I have been
involved with HACVS for several years and am now a director as well
as a Trustee.
I have been
involved with charity work for the past twenty odd years in
Horsham. I was Chairman and Director of the Springboard Project for
nine years and was Chairman and Director of Horsham Abbeyfield
Society for 15 years. I was also Trustee and Director of Relate for
North & South and South-West Sussex for 21 years. I am currently
Chairman of the Horsham Museum Society.
In my working life
for thirty five years I was a professional launderer and General
Manager operating between five factories providing fine quality
linens to many prestigious locations including Buckingham Palace. I
retired in 1985 and then became a school governor of two schools,
one for small children and another for children with severe learning
difficulties.
I was also a
Horsham District Councillor for eight years.
In my spare time I
enjoy reading and doing crossword puzzles. |

I was born in 1922
in Cambridge and attended Perse School, leaving in 1940 to join the
army. My next six years were spent mainly as an officer in the
Indian Army in India, Burma and Ceylon. In 1948, after a short
period in the Metropolitan Police, I entered the Probation Service
as a Home Office Trainee, studying at the London School of
Economics. I subsequently served in Middlesex and Hampshire until
1960 when appointed to a senior post in the local authority mental
health service. After six years I transferred to the Social
Services Inspectorate of the DHSS.
Following
retirement in 1982 I became involved in the voluntary field
including Worthing Voluntary Health Council, co-opted membership of
West Sussex County Council Social Services Committee and member of
Worthing Mind Committee. On a more practical level I have driven
the Steyning Community minibus and also the the local Good
Neighbours organisation. I was awarded the MBE in the 2000 New
Year's Honours List for Services to the Community.
I am married, we
have recently celebrated our diamond anniversary and I have a middle
aged son.

years working for the local CAB running the Partnerships for Older
People project, supporting voluntary and community groups working
with older people. In April 2010, I took on the role of Chief
Executive at Horsham Matters, a relatively new local social
enterprise that aims to provide services that support local
residents.
